I was recently listening to a JR Robinson interview where he talked about the recording process of Quincy Jones' "The Dude" album, and how he was told not to use any toms/play any drum fills. When I decided to listen to the record to hear what he played, this track stuck out to me and I fell in love with the song and groove! The toms were not needed or missed! I recently dived into some of Warren Zevon's music as the recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction caught my eye. I knew that drummers like Jeff Porcaro and Rick Marotta were on some of his material, but I had never checked their parts out. This one stuck out to me for obvious reasons. Rick's groove on this is so fun to play and has been a great lesson in playing more laid back and behind the beat. The fills he plays in the outro are so musical and I love the way they feel because of the space he leaves in his phrases. Enjoy!
